Neck Pain Q & A
Why is neck pain so common?
The neck is strong and flexible but also delicate, with many moving parts. It is made up of an array of muscles and ligaments along with six cervical discs that provide cushioning between the seven cervical vertebrae, which connect the skull to the thoracic spine in your back. The neck supports the head -- a lot of weight for a small, thin set of bones and soft tissues -- which is why strong head movements can lead to neck damage.
A major contributor to neck pain today is bad posture -- specifically “hunching” forward towards your phone or computer screen, which can pull your neck into unnatural positions that can lead to significant pain and inflammation as well as a loss of mobility.
Injuries from auto collisions, such as “whiplash,” are also a very common cause of neck pain, and something Dr. Enayati and Dr. Gruver treat on a daily basis. Dr. Enayati is also particularly skilled at resolving neck pain from sports injuries.
How do Dr. Enayati and Dr. Gruver treat neck pain?
Every patient is different and therefore so is his or her treatment plan. Dr. Enayati and Dr. Gruver always starts by diagnosing the underlying cause of each patient’s neck pain. This includes taking a complete medical history, discussing symptoms in detail, and conducting a comprehensive physical examination.
Sometimes simple in-office trigger point injections have a remarkable effect on neck pain. Corticosteroid injections into the joints as well as epidural injections into the spine are effective treatments for neck pain. Regenerative options such as PRP and Stem Cell treatments can have a significant and long-term impact on patients with neck pain. Other options for some patients include radiofrequency ablation or implantation of a spinal cord stimulator.
Should I see a chiropractor or a pain doctor for my neck pain? What about physical therapy and acupuncture?
Dr. Enayati and Dr. Gruver are firm believers in chiropractic therapy, physical therapy, acupuncture, and integrative therapies (included guided stretch therapies, meditation, and yoga) as part of many patients’ treatment plan. He works very closely with a number of chiropractors and physical therapists in the Beverly Hills area and beyond to coordinate patient care and achieve meaningful results. Patients should see Dr. Enayati when they need help diagnosing or treating their pain. He can provide many treatments that chiropractors and physical therapists cannot, but that also increase the effectiveness of therapy - such as decreasing inflammation at the spine facet joints, which allowing for improved mobilization so that patients can do more with their physical therapist. Do not be surprised if he also recommends that you visit a chiropractor, acupuncturist, or physical therapist as part of your treatment plan. Dr. Enayati loves working with other providers as part of a team dedicated to your recovery and well-being.
